Starting at Tucker Beach, you’ll roll out across the iconic 90 m Kimi‑ākau Suspension Bridge, a breathtaking gateway linking Frankton’s trail network to the gorge. Towering above the Shotover River, it offers sweeping canyon views—an exhilarating entrance to the 5.5 km route.
After the bridge, the terrain eases into a gently rolling section of scenic riverside trail—with the Remarkables framing the horizon—leading you toward the narrow, steeper gorge segment .
As you near the old Hugo Tunnel (~108 m), the trail tightens with steeper climbs and switchbacks known as a grade‑4 segment. Expect a technical stretch where dismounting is common—timed tunnel lights (activated by buttons) guide your passage through the historic mining structure.
Riders often choose to walk through the tunnel for added safety and ease.
Once you emerge from the tunnel and crest the switchbacks, the trail levels out and descends toward Arthurs Point. You’ll pass through beech forest and gravel meanders above Big Beach, with occasional cliffs and single-track flair—keep your wits about you as the canyon hugs loosely to the river’s edge.
The ride finishes near Gantley’s Tavern at 172 Arthurs Point Road, a fitting spot for post-ride fuel and a cold drink.

Meet us at our depot on Gorge Road, Queenstown to collect your bike, OR we can bring bikes to your accommodation*. Our shuttle will drop you at the start of the trail at Tucker Beach or Shotover Bridge for a longer ride.
Ride to Arthurs Point and back to our depot on Gorge Road
Ride the Shotover Gorge Trail to Arthurs Point then follow the Arthurs Point trail back to our depot on Gorge Road.

The trail is approximately 5.5 km long one-way. Most riders or walkers complete it in 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on pace and stops.
This is a moderate to advanced (Grade 3–4) trail. It includes narrow sections, steep switchbacks, gravel surfaces, a tunnel, and a high suspension bridge. Some parts may require walking your bike.
Absolutely. E-bikes are recommended, especially for less experienced riders or those looking to tackle the climbs and longer rides connecting to other Queenstown Trails.
The Hugo Tunnel is a restored 108-metre mining tunnel from the 1960s, now a feature of the trail. It has solar-powered lighting activated by buttons at each end. Cyclists must dismount and walk their bikes through.
