Queenstown to Cromwell Return

with FREE pick-up from your accommodation *

The new Kawarau Gorge Trail, opening soon near Queenstown, offers riders a spectacular addition to Central Otago’s network.

Winding through dramatic river gorges, and golden tussock slopes, the route delivers stunning alpine and river valley vistas at every turn; perfect for soaking in the region’s unique landscape.

The trail provides an important link between the Queenstown Trail network and the wider Central Otago routes, connecting directly through to Cromwell and Lake Dunstan and creating easier access to the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold trails.

The trail is ideal both as a standalone day ride and as part of a longer, multi-day touring itinerary that explores more of Otago’s iconic cycling corridors.

Designed to be enjoyed by most riders, the Kawarau Gorge Trail features well-graded surface and manageable gradients suitable for families, recreational cyclists and e-bike users; a few short steeper sections reward effort with great views.

Facilities and access points are planned to support flexible trip lengths, so riders can choose a leisurely day out or link trails for a memorable multi-day adventure.

* FREE pick-up from accommodation in Central Queenstown. Additional fees may apply from outside this area.

FAQs

At the moment there is no official opening date, although we expect it to be open mid / late 2026.

The trail will be approximately 32km of well-graded gravel and compacted trail, along with exciting board walk sections

Expect 2-4hrs depending on fitness, stops and whether you are riding an ebike or mountain bike. If ridden as part of a multi-day trip linking to Cromwell, Lake Dunstan, Roxburgh Gorge or Clutha Gold, plan 2–5 days depending on your itinerary.

Definitely. E-bikes are recommended, especially for less experienced riders or those looking to tackle the climbs and longer rides connecting to other trails.

Families can enjoy the trail, though assess young children’s ability for longer distances and rougher sections.

There are planned rest/viewing areas on the trail plus cafés, shops, and accommodation are available at the start and end of the trail. Toilets will be available near the start and end of the trail, plus part way through near the Goldfield’s Mining Centre.
